Dans le Dictionnaire encyclopédique d'électronique anglais-français, 1991, p. 605, le terme "surcharge" est défini comme "une charge excessive" (application d'une charge excessive à un dispositif). Dans un dispositif électrique ou électronique, ce terme désigne le passage d'un courant d'intensité supérieure à la valeur nominale. Quand il s'agit d'une surcharge de courte durée, cette charge excessive est très brève.
